Can "Network Discovery is turned off" be turned off?
New to W7. We're testing it out, playing with the configuration and will eventually be deploying it out to our End Users. When you click on "Network", when Network Discovery is on, Windows will scan and find all the nearby computers on the network. For most of the icons shown, when you click on them nothing appears, but for some there is info that is accessible. We allow our EU to be local admins on their machine, though we may be changing that at some point. If I turn off Network Discovery, no icons appear, but the beige banner then appears (right below the "Organize", "Search Active Directory" etc... options - similar to when you're prompted to allow popups, or download/install active x). So it's pretty simple matter of clicking on that and then selecting "Turn On..." I followed the steps here: http://www.askvg.com/how-to-remove-network-from-windows-7-explorers-navigation-pane/, which removed the Network icon and also seemed to remove the aforementioned "banner". But if I go into control panel > Network & Internet > "View network computers & devices", it's still scanning and showing all the nearby computers. I found some other info, and disabled the following services: Function Discovery Provider Host Function Discovery Resource Publication SSDP Discovery In Advanced Sharing, "Turn off Network discovery" is checked, but still, if I click on view network devices, I still see 53 nearby computers. Is there any way to set it so no nearby computers can be viewed and/or appear?
